Shepherd Valley Waldorf School Annual Report/Viewbook Design.
The comps are laid out in order by first to final version. Cover, inside spread and back cover.
Shepherd Valley is a private progressive school but the curriculum is classical. They were looking for a Annual Report to double as a Viewbook to show prospective parents what they have to offer the children that become part of the school family. They seemed to want something that was organic and yet represented the area of Boulder. The first comp had the organic look by using the child'd handprint with the reversed out heart, the sunflowers were added to the mountain photo. The heart shape is picked up on the inside spread and then on the back cover it is reversed. The client really liked this one but still wanted to see more ideas fleshed out. The second comp combines that Boulder area with the "Flatirons" view and the other photo combinations. The different photos of the childrens hands doing things was to keep the focus on the kids. Maybe not organic enough so the next few comps (the sunflowers at sunset & the pinecones) were put together to finally get us to the very last comp. The client liked the sunflower image all along and they were using that image on their website already so it was just a matter of using the sunflower image with the earthy colored background. The closeup view of the sunflower held great detail and that was an aspect of the school they had mentioned. The earthy brown was a great color for the background but it seems to need a pop and the artistic/handwrtten journal background was a hit in combination with the sunflower. The background imagery is a combination of botanic, insects, handwriting and music staff. It really speaks to the classical.
The imagery fades into the background so as not to be too obvious and wraps to the backcover.
The interior photos were all taken by the client so that is what was to be used inside.
To pause the images from rolling through just put your cursor on a photo.
